Alexandra's decorative paintings were first sold on commission to clients in the US, Australia and Europe. She participated in a mixed exhibition in, "A Return to Beauty", in 1994 at the Roy Miles Gallery in London. The paintings of Lillies and Orchids were well received. This show was followed in 1996 by a solo exhibition, "Faces and Flowers", again at the Roy Miles Gallery. Her work was featured at the Royal Horticultual Society's 1997 exhibition at the Rosemoor Centre in North Devon.

In 1998, Alexandra showed in a solo exhibition at the Hahn Gallery in Albemarle Street, London. That show included decorative paintings of Flowers, Fancy Fowl, Dogs, Leopards and Geese. At that exhibition she showed her first sculptures in bronze of Hippos, Leopards and a Young Elephant. These proved to be a success.

In 2004 Alexandra had another solo show in Sydney, Australia this time only showing flower paintings at the Charles Hewitt Gallery "Il Giardino Botanico Italiano".

Her next exhibition will be a solo show at the Complesso del Vittoriano, Sala Giubileo in Rome from 4th to 19th October 2005

Diverse Images - Common Elements

Alexandra now lives in Italy, drawing inspiration from the people, from the ancient landscape and from her animals and garden.

Alexandra's current work ranges widely from a simple bowl of home grown tomatoes and artichokes, to the exotic images of giraffes and leopards, from the wonderful faces of sheep to splendid fowl and elegant flowers.

Pattern, colour, texture - these elements are properties of the objects which Alexandra Clark paints, but the transformation of these objects to images on canvas depends on many factors. The observed element are not added together like some mathematical fomula. Instead, their "sum" is determined by the interaction between those physical elements and the eye, the vision, the mood, and the environment of the artist.

That environment has many features which impact on the artist. There is the spectacular space, long mountain views, ancient oak forests, vines and olive trees; and the birds, boar, and domestic animals - sheep, goats, and fowl. And supporting this is the deep, rich volcanic soil. Finally, there is the sun, the Tramontana wind, thunder storms and lightning.

All of this, the intrinsic properties of the objects themselves, and the world in which the act of painting takes place, are combined with a unique sense of form, structure, and pattern which has come from the artist's experience in fashion and textile design, mixed with the experiences of travel throughout the world. The result is a collection of work which, though varied in subject, maintains a common feeling of intimacy, humour, and comfort.
